Road rage can be deadly

On Behalf of | Mar 31, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Aggressive driving is a common term used to describe road rage. This occurs when a motorist loses control of their anger and puts others in danger because of their actions. Road rage is a contributing factor in one-third of all accidents that result in fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports.

Understanding what causes road rage can, in some cases, help innocent motorists and bystanders to avoid those whose emotions have spiraled out of control. This understanding can also potentially help motorists who are prone to road rage to manage their emotions more effectively.

What causes road rage?

Studies show that road rage incidents have more than doubled over the last decade. When drivers grow angry, being late is one of the main causes of their fury. They become enraged by any automobile that impedes their path or slows them down. Drivers who are consumed with rage often dehumanize other drivers by viewing them as nothing more than obstacles in the road.

Drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol are another factor contributing to the rise in incidences of road rage. These drivers have already made a poor decision by getting behind the wheel. Anything that stresses them out while they’re driving will inevitably make them more irate and can lead to an accident.

What to do if an aggressive driver causes you harm

The first thing you should do if an aggressive driver injures you in an accident is pull your car over to the side of the road and call 911. Do not confront the motorist! Doing so could make matters worse. When help arrives, allow the paramedics to examine you for injuries and take you to the hospital if necessary.

Once you are taken care of, your next step should be to seek assistance with pursuing compensation and reimbursement for your injuries.
