3 ways to get evidence after a vehicle crash

On Behalf of | Oct 21, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

If another driver crashes into you, there is a fair chance they will try to deny it was their fault. However clear-cut it seems to you, they or their insurer may try to claim that you were the one who was at fault.

If they succeed in convincing people that version of events is true it could prevent you from getting the compensation you need. Hence, getting evidence is crucial, as it can help you prove what really happened. Here are three ways to get it:

1. Call the police

You are legally obligated to call the police in all vehicle crashes where someone is injured. When the police arrive they can examine the scene, collect witness statements and take photos. The report they compile could help you prove your claim.

2. Use your phone

You’ve probably got a cell phone in your pocket. If it did not break in the crash, you can snap some pictures with it, note down details before you forget them and so on. This information gathering may not be possible if you are seriously injured, but anything you capture could serve you down the line. It can be especially useful for evidence that may disappear by the time the police arrive – such as if people move their vehicles to the side of the road, or witnesses don’t want to hang around.

3. Get legal help

Even when you have multiple pieces of evidence, the other party’s insurer may still try to claim that you were to blame. Insurers often try and limit the payouts they are obligated to make and boost their profits instead of helping those they should. Having the help of a team who can counter their tactics is a good idea if you want to get the compensation you deserve
