Can the color of your car help you avoid an accident?

When choosing to buy a new car, many people are very interested in safety. They want to know what safety devices there are that can keep them safe in an accident, such as airbags and crumple zones. They also want to know what safety devices can help them avoid an accident altogether, such as automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring or even adaptive cruise control.

But how much emphasis should you put on something simple, such as the color of the car that you choose? Could that actually have an impact on how safe you are on the road?

White cars are marginally safer

Studies do find that white cars are slightly safer than others, such as gray, brown, blue or black vehicles. The reason for this is just visibility. A white car stands out against a dark background or the dark asphalt of the road. It is also a bit more visible in low-light conditions, such as when someone is commuting at dawn or dusk.

Dark-colored cars tend to blend into the background. It is easier for another driver to overlook them, which could cause that driver to make a mistake, like turning left in front of the car.

White cars are already one of the most popular color choices in the United States. Accidents can still happen involving these vehicles, so there is no color that can fully guarantee you will not be involved in a crash. There is always some level of risk based on the actions of drivers around you, even if you have the safest car you can purchase.

Seeking financial compensation

As such, you may suffer injuries in an accident that one of these other drivers causes. If you do, it is important for you to understand exactly what legal options you have to seek financial compensation for medical bills and other costs.
