If you are out to do some Christmas shopping or hit the New Year sales, it is crucial to bear in mind that it can be a dangerous time on the roads and in the parking lots of popular stores or malls.
The pressure on people to find the right gift plus the stress of organizing family get-togethers can all weigh heavily on shoppers’ minds. Many of them will spend whole days or weekends, traipsing from store to store and driving from mall to mall, as they attempt to whittle down their shopping list. This can lead to numerous safety issues. Let’s look at three.
1. Fatigue
It can be tiring to go shopping at these popular times, with the heavy traffic and the crowds. Attending the obligatory Christmas parties or catching up with friends for drinks can also leave people short on sleep. Tired drivers are not as safe as well-rested ones.
2. Distractions
Look around the stores, and you will see plenty of frazzled-looking parents, doing their best to keep their kids from flipping out before they manage to get everything they need to buy. Bored and tired children can be highly distracting on the car journey as well as in the store, taking the parent’s attention away from the road. Couples without children can also be guilty of distracted driving due to engaging in arguments brought on by the stress of the day.
3. Tempers flaring
Road rage is common at this time of year. You might see drivers fighting over parking spaces or letting another vehicle into the line. In some cases, they step out of their cars and confront each other, but often they instead drive in a dangerous way, such as racing into a parking space. It’s not just the people in vehicles that could be injured. A pedestrian may be injured by a driver who is so intent on beating another driver into a space that they fail to check that it is clear.
If you are injured by a driver, remember that none of the above-mentioned things are excuses for negligent driving. If they did something wrong, then you should be able to hold them responsible for compensation. Having legal guidance can help.
