Heavy store traffic can increase the risk of a slip-and-fall

Slip-and-fall incidents can happen at any time. However, certain circumstances increase the likelihood of people losing traction in public locations and experiencing a same-level fall. Even when the weather outside is blustery, retail establishments may have a steady stream of customers visiting.

Around the holidays, for example, people may need to acquire last-minute ingredients for holiday meals or gifts. When there are heavy levels of foot traffic at businesses, the possibility of a slip-and-fall increases. What factors make busy stores more dangerous?

Store entranceway issues

Every person who comes inside from the snow may track some moisture in on their shoes or boots. Eventually, that can lead to the saturation of rugs.

Additionally, people trying to dry or clean their footwear could disturb the rugs, turning them into a tripping hazard. Entranceways and aisles at stores tend to be messier and more dangerous when there are high volumes of customers.

Limitations caused by understaffing

The more customers there are trying to make purchases and interact with workers, the less time employees have to attend to cleaning and similar job responsibilities. Unfortunately, facility maintenance may not receive the attention it deserves when there are many customers visiting the business. Companies that schedule too few workers may create scenarios where workers cannot keep the space safe and clean.

If a company could have prevented a slip-and-fall with better cleaning or staffing practices, then negligence could be to blame for the incident. When reasonable people can recognize hazards and how to address them, the company could face responsibility for failing to maintain safe facilities.

Reviewing what caused the slip-and-fall and the harm it produced can help people determine if they may have grounds for a premises liability lawsuit to recoup their losses.
